I was one of the people that grew up with Mario, Sonic, and Lara Croft and I was reading somewhere that a majority of gamers are over the age of 18. The median/ average age for a gamer was about 30 but somehow a lot of people keep this stigma that video games are for kids or for people that lack social graces. I’m sure there are gamers out there that don’t help shake that stigma with their constant talk of tea bagging n00bs. Well I hope those tea baggers ban together as video games are being taken to court. The Supreme Court nonetheless. The final legal word.
In school, I was taught that the odds of a case going to the Supreme Court was smaller than the odds of you being discovered by a Hollywood agent while winning the lottery for 15 billion dollars but somehow it is happening. In fact the state of California (yes, California, the state that legalized marijuana is going after video games.) is helping it go to trial and the ammo that it’s using is all those studies that we gamers have pushed aside and scoffed at. You know the studies that say that video games are harmful to minors and should be regulated.
Well, what the developers of gamers are trying to prove that it is a legitimate form of media because if they can’t prove that, then video games can be considered obscene and subject to censorship. Now those who are American history buffs understand that the first amendment right of freedom of speech does have limitations. Things that satisfy the Miller test or the Three Prong Obscenity test do not enjoy freedom of speech and can be subjected to regulations and whatnot.
Now some of you are going to understand that a lot of states are going to bring back older laws that ban the sale of certain video games. Pretty soon all we would have would be Barbie Horse Adventures and Wii games about cooking.
Now California also believes that people under the age of 18 do not have the mental capabilities to make reasoned choices. Okay, I’m paraphrasing but I’m not even paraphrasing it out of context. Seriously look it up. It will make you think. ” Wow California, way to have faith in your youth.”
Now, it’s not all bad. There are a lot of allies on the side of video games who are arguing that we, the people, should have the right to buy whatever games that we want. Because shouldn’t we be responsible for our actions?
